Change for Change Penn has raised over $35,000 for seven local charities since its inception in the spring of 2000 at the University of Pennsylvania.
This pilot program at Penn ran during the final three weeks of the 1999-2000 academic year, and raised nearly $1,000 in loose change for Upward Bound - a program helping Philadelphia high school students gain admission to 4-year colleges and universities. Participating in this pilot were several Colleges Houses, Greek organizations, and other student groups.
During the 2000-2001 academic year, Change for Change Penn expanded to reach a greater number of students. Change for Change Penn formed a partnership with Penn's New Student Orientation to launch first ever Class of 2004 Charitable Giving Campaign. The freshmen class sponsored a year-long drive, and voted online to select three charities to which their funds would be donated - Parents and Children Against Drugs, St. Mary's Family Respite Center, and University City Hospitality Coalition. Change collection run by the Class of 2004 took place on Valentine's Day 2001. In addition, Greek organizations and other student groups coordinated similar efforts throughout the spring. In total, Change for Change Penn raised $3,000 for the three charities listed above.
Change for Change Penn commenced the 2001-2002 season with a campus-wide philanthropy campaign in response to the September 11 tragedy in New York and Washington. The University community raised $25,000 for The American Red Cross. Change for Change raised $8,000 for Rebuilding Together, a service event sponsored by UC Green, during the spring of 2002.
Change for Change Penn raised funds for the Variety Club of Philadelphia and Habitat for Humanity during the 2002-2003 season, and again for Habitat in its 2003-2004 season.
Change for Change was back on campus in 2005-06, raising funds for Katrina relief efforts. |
