Katrina Relief: D'Iberville Middle School - Gulfport, Mississippi |
Amherst raised funds for Katrina relief efforts throughout the 2005-2006 academic year. The D'Iberville Middle School located in Gulf Port, Mississippi, an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Middle School was the worst hit in the Harrison Country School District, suffering catastrophic damage. The students of D’Iberville, many of whom also lost their homes, currently attend half-day classes in portable buildings alongside students from the local elementary and high schools. Community and student-led fundraising and donation efforts have helped purchase needed infrastructural equipment and replace books, classroom supplies, and other basic items for the school. New England Center for Women in Transition |
Since 1979, the women of NELCWIT have been working to build safety, justice, and dignity for all. Serving Franklin County and the North Quabbin region of western Massachusetts, the organization offers shelter, counseling, education, and advocacy to women and children who have survived domestic violence or sexual abuse, and community education for area schools, professionals, and other groups. Amherst Shelter for Adolescents |
Amherst Shelter for Adolescents is a transitional living shelter for at-risk teenagers. The kids stay at the shelter between one week and one year. Amherst students volunteer at the shelter as mentors and tutors. Dates: Fall 2001 Donation: $1,250 |
