Past Charities

Katrina Relief: D'Iberville Middle School - Gulfport, Mississippi

Amherst raised funds for Katrina relief efforts throughout the 2005-2006 academic year. The D'Iberville Middle School located in Gulf Port, Mississippi, an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Middle School was the worst hit in the Harrison Country School District, suffering catastrophic damage. The students of D’Iberville, many of whom also lost their homes, currently attend half-day classes in portable buildings alongside students from the local elementary and high schools. Community and student-led fundraising and donation efforts have helped purchase needed infrastructural equipment and replace books, classroom supplies, and other basic items for the school.

New England Center for Women in Transition

Since 1979, the women of NELCWIT have been working to build safety, justice, and dignity for all. Serving Franklin County and the North Quabbin region of western Massachusetts, the organization offers shelter, counseling, education, and advocacy to women and children who have survived domestic violence or sexual abuse, and community education for area schools, professionals, and other groups. Dates: Spring 2004, Spring 2005

Not Bread Alone is a community meal program in Amherst, MA serving breakfast and lunch as well as offering free groceries adn baked goods.

The Food bank Farm is a 60 acre community-supported farm in Western Massachusettes.

Providence Ministries For The Needy, Inc

Providence Ministries For The Needy, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides many services to the needy in Holyoke, MA. The organization is affiliated with and sponsored by the Sisters of Providence. The range of services includes the following: housing and residential care, basic supports and teaching, job assistance, and life/survival skill development.

El Arco Iris is a community art center that provides free after school arts education and leadership development programming to South Holyoke youth of color.

A program that manages the community gardens in Holyoke that provide vegetables and fruits to families that collectively work to maintain the gardens. The program also provides an opportunity for tutoring and mentoring.

Girls Inc. is an after school enrichment and activity program for low-income girls. Amherst students tutor and advise the girls on various projects.

Safe Passages

This organization in the Northampton Area provides shelter and counseling for battered women and their children. Students usually work with the children in the program.

Amherst Shelter for Adolescents

Amherst Shelter for Adolescents is a transitional living shelter for at-risk teenagers. The kids stay at the shelter between one week and one year. Amherst students volunteer at the shelter as mentors and tutors.

Jesse's House

Jesse's House is a shelter for homeless families in the Northampton Area. Students that work at the shelter keep the children busy while their parents run errands or go to meetings.
